IS THIS 'HEALTHY LIVING' ARTICLE REALLY HEALTHY?

My response;

"I read with incredulity and disdain the pseudoscience as proclaimed in this article. If I were to recommend any aspect of these carb myths to my patients they would get heavier, blood pressures, triglycerides and blood sugars would increase, HDLs would lower, and the overall health of my patients would deteriorate; all while lining the coffers of the pharmaceutical companies.

Nice work Healthy Living, or should I say 'Unhealthy Living.' Unfortunately this is just another example of beliefs, theories, suppositions and myths reigning over the facts.

I have nothing further to say..."

  1. Hi, Dr. Jim! Right now I am listening to your speech at the Weston A. Price response to the 2010 USDA Guidelines. Very impressive. It gave me the idea to write to you, and I wonder if you can take a moment or two to respond.

My name is Rebecca Latham, and I am one of the success stories in the new Atkins book. My husband and I have been doing low carb (under 50 total carbs per day, no grains, no legumes, limited dairy) for two years now.

In your speech, you talked about how people's blood work would improve after going low carb. When we started, my husband's cholesterol was just over 200. After two years of low carb, it is now 335. His triglycerides are good, and his LDL is pattern A, but super high. His HDL is decent, but not very high.

Of course, his doc wants him on statins right now and says he will die any minute.

Have you ever seen this in your practice? Aside from eating organic and grass fed and low carb, what else can we do? And why in the world is his LDL so high? I thought low carb was supposed to lower LDL.

    Thank you for your time.

    Rebecca

  2. Hi Rebecca,

I have also been LCing for the past two years (under 50 total carbs per day, no grains, no legumes, limited dairy) and the change in my blood work results have been almost identical to your husband's except that my HDL is a respectable 78. My doctor also thinks I am going to drop over at any moment. So, I too would like some more clarification in this area.

  3. Hello Rebecca and Susan,

Robb Wolf addresses the issue you are both asking about here at the 10:56 mark in his most recent podcast http://robbwolf.com/2011/04/12/the-paleo-solution-episode-75/

    Do NOT go on statins!

    All the best!

  6. I have an LDL of 269 HDL of 43. I have been on low carb since may 2011. Today is Sept 2011. What should I do? Should I be concerned? I know conventional docs would be. But is this normal for low carb lifestyle? or is it a sign of inflammation? etc.

If youre able, email me at stealthspoon1@yahoo.com
