BE DAZZLING LECTURE!

I was privileged and honored to be invited to speak about nutrition at an event hosted by the Franciscan Alliance in Northwest Indiana. The event was called Bedazzling and it was attended by well over 400 women as it focused mainly on women's health. This was a great opportunity to get the word out about the correct way to eat, especially to women. Now nothing against the male gender, but my experience over the years has been that it is women who seek and want the truth about how to get and stay healthy. Being able to reach this large an audience at once was a great way to spread the truth about proper nutrition!

  1. I have two questions about low carb: 1) How do you prevent constipation (a lot of veggies?) since you're not eating whole grains (fiber)? 2) If you eat low carb is it ok to Sometimes have cake or dessert at social situations or will that throw the whole body off balance.

  2. I get the constipation question a lot. The first thing I do is define what constipation really is; it is the difficult passage of rock hard solid stools; it is not simply the fact that a patient has not 'pooped'today. Many people mistakenly believe that they have to have a bowel movement on a daily basis, but this is not true. Normal bowel movements can be from 1 to 3 a day to 1-3 a week; yes, you read that correctly. I also like to point out the fact that stool is waste and when one eats more efficiently there will be less waste, hence, less stool. Therefore, it is not uncommon when one starts a low carb eating style that they poop less because now one is eating more efficiently, hence less waste.

Sure you can eat more green leafy veggies to help with regularity if you need to; also, increase fluid intake, avoid caffeinated beverages and remember the number one treatment for constipation is movement, i.e. exercise.

The answer to the second question is that it is entirely OK to have cake, candy etc. at, say, a social event, just don't do it too frequently. I tell my patients that you are only as bad as your last meal. Once you eat your next low carb meal your body will get back into a healthier state and all is well. You see, once one starts to eat low carb, it has an immediate effect on your body's biochemistry for the better.

Another good tip is I tell my patients to pick a day of the week (mine is Friday night) where you eat your pasta or cake or candy; just make sure it's only once a week :-) Keep your indulgence to less than two hours and you generally won’t see any negative effects. I look at it like a 'reward' for eating the correct way throughout the week and it diminishes the 'cravings' one can get for these foods because you know you can have it at least once a week.

Thanks so much for your questions!
